I worked at voordeeluitjes.nl for 1.5 years, starting as a UX researcher. I later switched to become a UX/UI designer because i started missing the creative aspect of UX. I designed interfaces, prototyped, created visual designs, and collaborated with the development team. My diverse experience has equipped me with a unique perspective for any future projects.
Within Voordeeluitjes not much attention was spend on the importance of accessibility. To improve the website for all users I decided to make a powerpoint about the pro’s of a11y and convinced the managers why we should put more work into making our website as accesisble as possible. After doing a lot of research on the guidelines I also invited a visually impaired man to the office to navigate through our website and show us how he uses our website with his braille-machine.
After the research phase we developed a skip-link, made sure the website was readable for screen readers and created outlines for all components. The website is now compatible for keyboard-only navigation and blind users.
As a user researcher, I conducted user tests through Skype to gain a deeper understanding of how customers use our products. In doing so, I covered a wide range of scenarios and different parts of the website to assess what needs improvement. Through these tests, we got actionable feedback on pain points in the user experience, identify areas for enhancement, and craft solutions that meet customer needs. The insights gathered from these user tests allowed us to make informed design decisions and to build products that better serve our customers. Ultimately, conducting regular user tests is integral to creating user-centric products and delivering high-quality user experiences.
After running user tests I analyzed the data to find key insights. I wrote reports, shared them with relevant departments, and identified areas for improvement and potential opportunities. This informed the development of new features and functionalities, resulting in improved product development and customer satisfaction.
Voordeeluitjes did not own a design library so we decided on making a library. To make this library we decided to switch from XD to Figma because Figma has the ability to reuse components and create styles for fonts and colors.
For the library we did a lot of research on atomic design and how to make interactive components with different states. The main goal was to create guidelines to make more consistency on the website in components. This library was not just created for the UX/UI team but also for software development who decided to use a tailwind css system.
From our collected data through surveys and calls from Contact center we saw that users were often not easily finding what they were looking for. The Voordeeluitjes website exists out of themes like ‘single travel’, ‘all inclusive packages’ and ‘pets allowed’.
Those themed pages can be found in the header menu navigation. On desktop this is easier to find but on mobile these pages are a lot harder to find.
The contact center told us they experienced a lot of people calling in every day to ask how they get to specific pages.
We created the hypothesis ‘how can we help users find what they are looking for more easily?’.
The ideation proces started and I made some sketches of some rough ideas i had on how to improve navigation. I decided to focus mainly on the homepage because that is the page where people get inspired from our body content.
For the sketches it was important to focus on mobile first. To decide which pages we were going to highlight and in what order we used data from Google Analytics to find out what our users ask for the most. We combined search terms and most visited pages together. Because this feature is introduced as A/B test we will measure the clicks on the menu items to see if the order needs any tweaking in the future.
After a few sketches and brainstorming about them with our team we came to a final design that is now running as an A/B test to the Voordeeluitjes website. The results are not clear yet because the test is still running.
